Build-ups and materials

Thermal envelope

Where heat leaves the house, to the outside or into the ground. The U-value is the figure that matters.

External wall, 500 mm, with external insulation (ETICS)

U =0.155 W/(m²·K)R = 6.28 m²·K/W

  1. Thin-coat silicone render on mesh10 mm
  2. Grey EPS facade insulation100 mm
  3. Insulating clay block375 mm
  4. Internal lime plaster15 mm

Ceiling under the ventilated loft, 320 mm mineral wool

U =0.112 W/(m²·K)R = 8.71 m²·K/W

  1. Mineral wool 2 × 160 mm on the ceiling320 mm
  2. Vapour control layer1 mm
  3. Prestressed hollow-core slab300 mm
  4. Ceiling plaster10 mm

The loft is cold and ventilated and the insulation lies on the ceiling, so the energy balance counts the ceiling, not the roof.

Ground-floor slab

U =0.203 W/(m²·K)R = 4.75 m²·K/W

  1. Blinding concrete100 mm
  2. Waterproofing membrane5 mm
  3. Reinforced-concrete ground slab150 mm
  4. EPS floor insulation150 mm
  5. Cement screed with underfloor heating65 mm
  6. Floor finish (oak or tiles)15 mm

The build-up alone, without the ground. The Energy page includes the soil beneath the house.

Insulated wall to the garage

U =0.267 W/(m²·K)R = 3.48 m²·K/W

  1. Thin-coat render8 mm
  2. Mineral wool facade boards100 mm
  3. Precision-ground clay block270 mm
  4. Lime plaster15 mm

Other constructions

Internal walls and parts outside the heated volume. The thickness is the main figure; U is given for completeness.

Cold ventilated roof over the loft

256 mmU = 0.631 W/(m²·K)

  1. Standing-seam steel roofing · not counted1 mm
  2. Close boarding · not counted24 mm
  3. Ventilated gap (counter-battens) · not counted50 mm
  4. Breathable roof membrane1 mm
  5. Rafters180 mm

Layers outside the ventilated gap do not count towards U.

Internal load-bearing wall, 300 mm

300 mmU = 1.023 W/(m²·K)

  1. Lime plaster15 mm
  2. Precision-ground clay block270 mm
  3. Lime plaster15 mm

Partition, 150 mm

150 mmU = 1.674 W/(m²·K)

  1. Lime plaster17.5 mm
  2. Clay partition block115 mm
  3. Lime plaster17.5 mm

How it is calculated

Room areas are net, measured between the wall faces. The floor area adds up the heated rooms without the garage; Home, Energy and Budget use the same figure. The built-up area covers the house with its garage, the covered terrace and the porch, as on the Plot page.

Room numbers follow the order in which you reach the rooms from the entrance: the storey before the dot, then the sequence.

Layers run from outside in; floors from the ground up. U is the thermal transmittance to EN ISO 6946, excluding thermal bridges; R is the resistance of the layers alone.
